Abstract

Gunter’s Quadrant merupakan buah karya Edmund Gunter dalam memodifikasi Horary Quadrant. Meskipun hasil modifikasi, Gunter’s Quadrant tidak dapat digunakan untuk menghitung waktu salat umat Islam. Padahal pada model sebelumnya buatan astronom Muslim, instrumen Horary Quadrant dapat digunakan untuk mengakomodir kebutuhan umat Islam dalam mengetahui waktu-waktu ibadah. Studi ini dimaksudkan untuk menjawab permasalahan: (1) Bagaimana modifikasi Gunter’s Quadrant agar dapat digunakan sebagai instrumen hisab awal waktu salat ? (2) Bagaimana keakurasian hasil hisab awal waktu salat menggunakan Gunter’s Quadrant yang termodifikasi ? Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pengembangan atau Development Research. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah dokumentasi, wawancara, dan observasi. Sedangkan teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah deskriptif, verifikatif, dan komparatif.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) modifikasi Gunter’s Quadrant sebagai instrumen hisab awal waktu salat dapat dilakukan dengan cara memperbaiki desain dasar Gunter’s Quadrant. Selanjutnya dilakukan penambahan kurva waktu Asar berdasarkan tinggi Matahari, skala equation of time, dan kurva koreksi waktu terbit dan terbenam. (2) Hasil uji akurasi menunjukkan bahwa Gunter’s Quadrant termodifikasi belum cukup layak untuk dapat dijadikan salah satu alat pedoman untuk menentukan awal waktu salat dengan galat maksimal sebesar 4 menit. Namun dalam keperluan praktis, Gunter’s Quadrant masih layak untuk difungsikan sebagai instrumen alternatif hisab awal waktu salat dengan basis data ephemeris Matahari rata-rata tahun 2019.

ABSTRACT:

Gunter’s Quadrant is the work of Edmund Gunter in modifying the Horary Quadrant. Despite of the modification, Gunter’s Quadrant cannot be used to calculate the Muslims’ prayer times. Whereas in previous models that made by Muslim astronomers, the Horary Quadrant can be used to accommodate the needs of Muslims in reckoning prayer times. This study is intended to answer the problem: (1) How is the modification of Gunter’s Quadrant to be used as an instrument in reckoning prayer times ? (2) How is the accuracy of the modified Gunter’s Quadrant in reckoning Muslims’ prayer times? This research is the kind of Development Research. Data collection techniques used are documentation, interviews, and observation. While the data analysis techniques used are descriptive, verification, and comparative.
The results in this study indicate that (1) modification of Gunter’s
Quadrant as an instrument in reckoning prayer times can be done by improving the basic design of Gunter’s Quadrant. Next is the addition of the Asar time curve based on the Sun’s altitude, the scale of the equation of time, and the correction curve for sunrise and sunset times. (2) The result of accuracy test shows that the modified Gunter’s Quadrant is not sufficiently feasible to be used as a guideline in reckoning prayer times with maximum error 4 minutes. However, in practical terms, Gunter’s Quadrant is still feasible to be used as an alternative instrument in reckoning prayer times with Sun’s mean ephemeris data in year 2019 as reference.
