Abstract

Thesis is entitled “The Improving Students’ Ability On Phrasal Verbs Using Songs (A Classroom Action Research with the 11th Graders Students of MAN Kendal in the Academic Year 2010/2011). The Population of this study was 35 students, 22 girls and 13 boys.
The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of songs as media to teach phrasal verbs and to describe the improvement of students understanding on phrasal verbs after being thought through using songs.
In conducting the study, the writer collected the data from observation, tests and questioner. And there are three cycles; every cycle teacher gives different song. The first cycle, writer gives first treatment and first song “My Love" by The Westlife. The second cycle, writer gives second treatment and second song; here the writer used song entitled "Break Away" by Kelly Clarkson. In third cycle, the writer gave the third treatment. Writer used song entitled "You Took My Heart Away" by Michael Learns To Rock.
The data analyses of this study are completed using qualitative and quantitative method. The writer is using some method and field note to collect the data. The analysis of data showed that there was a significant difference of the students' achievement exercise one to other was increasing. It was found that knowing students' about phrasal verbs through songs was very beneficial for the students to facilitate them in learning phrasal verbs.
The use of songs in Teaching Phrasal verbs is very helpful in improving students’ ability of teaching phrasal verbs. As the result of the mean score, the students’ improvement during the treatment through songs was 55.08 in the test of cycle 1. 68.34 in the test of cycle 2. And 77.48 in the test of cycle 3. The range these test were significance every cycle.
From these data, the writer concludes that implementation of songs as the media teaching phrasal verbs can help the students to know the phrasal verbs.
