Abstract

The background of the study in this research is based on the phenomena the students’ difficulties in learning English writing of narrative text. The student cannot hear the drill and presentation of the lesson in a long period of time when were having the subject in the class. They tend to talk to each other rather than listen to the teacher. They cannot just sit quietly pay full attention during the lesson without doing anything. The situation makes the teaching learning process boring and monotonous.To improve the writing of narrative text, teacher needs strategy or media to make students enjoy and easy to write. The chained picture is one of media to aim at improving students writing skill of narrative text. The problems of this research is how is the improvement of students’ writing skill of narrative text after being taught using chain picture media at the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Blora in the academic year of 2009/2010?
Method of the research is Classroom Action Research. Classroom action research is a reflective study done by teacher in a classroom for getting solution about the problem until it can be solved. The study was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Blora in the academic year of 2009-2010. The subjects of this study were the students of this school grade VIII G. The number of the subjects was thirty six students;seven teen girls and nine teen boys.In these findings, the researcher presents the result of research and the analysis of the data collected which were conducted through pre-cycle, first cycle and second cycle.
The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students achievement in the pre-cycle, first cycle andsecond cycle. The students achievement in the pre-cycle was49.41 %, in the first cycle was 58.70% and in the second cycle was 71.26%. It showed that the students achievement in writing narrative text improved.
Based on the study, it is found that the use of chained pictures can improve the students writing skill of narrative text. Chained pictures are very beneficial for the students in order to facilitate them in learning English especially writing narrative texts. Therefore, a teacher should always give an interesting atmosphere in teaching-learning process to make the students enjoy learning English more.
