Abstract

The background of the study in this research is the students still have difficulties in speaking English language and they are shy to speak English. The teacher still uses conventional method; the teacher only focuses on vocabulary and seldom practice conversation or dialogue. To improve students speaking skill, teacher can use fishbowl conversation as technique to help her in teaching learning process. In The problems of this research can be stated as follow: 1. How is the implementation of fishbowl technique to improve students’ speaking skill? 2. How is the improvement of students' speaking skill after being taught through using fishbowl technique? The objectives of this study are: 1. To describe the implementation of fishbowl technique to improve students' speaking skill, 2. To identify the improvement of students' speaking skill after being taught through using fishbowl technique. This study is a classroom action research that was done in three cycles. The researcher used test and observation to collect the data. To analyze the data, descriptive quantitative analysis is used; it is to present the result of study in the form of descriptive explanation. Statistic analysis is used to analyze the data about the improvement of students’ speaking skill through using fishbowl conversation as technique. The study was conducted at MI Tarbiyatul Banin Pekalongan Winong Pati in the Academic Year of 2009/2010. The subject of this study was the students of fifth graders in class 5B. The number of the students was nineteen. The research design used was classroom action research. This successfulness can be seen from the result of students’ average score and good responses by students. The result after getting all of the treatment using fishbowl technique, the students’ average score increased. Students’ average score from the first cycle was 4.8, second was cycle 5.7, and third cycle was 6.7.
