Abstract

The thesis discussed the influence of frequency of listening to English songs toward students’ vocabulary power. Teenagers like listening musics, not only Indonesian songs but also English songs. The development of technology
helps them search and download newest song from billboard. Besides, students still get difficulties in learning new vocabularies. In educational field, students usually learn vocabulary passively. Students have nothing to do in a
vocabulary learning section but to listen to their teacher. There are many ways to create students’ learning process. One of them is by using a song as the teaching process. The objectives of the study are: (1) To investigate the
students’ frequency of listening English songs,(2) To investigate the students’ vocabulary power, (3) To find out whether there is significant correlation between the frequency of listening English songs and students’ vocabulary power. The study was conducted at SMP NU 03 Islam Kaliwungu Kendal in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. The subject of the research are first grade students of SMP NU 03 Islam Kaliwungu Kendal. The data was gathered by
questionnaire and achievement test. The researcher took multiple choice in both questionnaire and achievement test. In taking vocabulary test, the researcher gavematerialfrom their modul about environment (Weather and Season). All data then analyzed using correlative study.Based on the correlation analysis, rxy = 0.211; rtable with N = 52 and = 5% is 0.279 After the test of correlation coefficient, the result shows that rxy<rtable. It means that rxy can not be generalized in the population. The value of correlation between students’ frequency of listening English song and their vocabulary enrichment is 0.211; that shows a low correlation of both variables. It means students’ frequency of listening to English songs not give much effect to their
vocabulary power.
