Abstract

This research discusses the effectiveness of using snowball throwing to teach descriptive text in reading comprehension of eighth grade students of MTs Sunan Muria Pati in the academic year of 2015/2016. The background of this research is focused on the students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text. This research was intended to answer the following research question; 1) How is the average score of pretest of the experimental and the control groups?, 2) How is the average score of posttest of the experimental and the control groups? And, 3) How is the difference between the average score of pretest and posttest of the experimental and the control groups?. Population of the research was eighth grade students of MTs Sunan Muria Pati in the academic year of 2015/2016. This was an experimental research. It was conducted into two classes, experimental class (Class C) and control class (Class A) which was chosen by cluster random sampling technique. Experimental class was taught descriptive text by Snowball Throwing while control class was taught conventionally. Instrument of the research were written test and documentation. There were pre-test and post-test to collect data. From the result of analysis of normality test and homogeneity test, it was known that both groups have normal distribution and have same variant. Another formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was a difference between average score of experimental and control class or not. Based on the data obtained, it showed that pre-test average score of experimental group was 62,29 and control class was 63,88. Meanwhile, the post-test average of experimental class was 71,25 and control class was 1540 Furthermore, it was obtained that obtained tcount 2,0129, while t table 0,755. Because tcount > ttable (2,0129 > 0,755). So Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted that there was a difference of the post-test average score between experimental and control class. Conclusion, Snowball Throwing is effective in teaching descriptive text in reading comprehension at the eighth grade students of MTs Sunan Muria Pati in the academic year of 2015/2016.
