Abstract

This research aimed to describe the attitudes expressed by Lawrence towards Hester’s family in The Rocking-Horse Winner viewed from Appraisal Devices. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The collected data were in the form of sentences, phrases, clauses, words, and then they were classified into their categories to get conclusion. The data were collected by searching and downloading The Rocking-Horse Winner Short story and the movie from internet as source of data, retyping, reading and comprehending the text, and then collecting appraisal items. The data were analyzed by identifying appraisal items used by Lawrence in the short story, classifying appraisal items into appraisal devices, interpreting appraisal items, and then drawing the conclusion. The result of this research shows that there are 73appraisal devices produced by Lawrence in The Rocking-Horse Winner. The analysis of data shows that Lawrence produces more Affects (64,38%) than Judgments (16,44%) and Appreciation (19,18%). It means the writer tends to evaluate character’s emotion. The most engagement is Heterogloss (56,16%). The writer only uses little of Monogloss (43,84%). In the short story Lawrence shows more negative (63,01%) than positive (36,98%) attitude.
