Abstract

The method applied to the university to attract prospective students is different. Especially, IAIN Walisongo Semarang which has several methods to attract the attention of prospective students, such us, SPMB (Seleksi Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru), PSSB (Penerimaan Seleksi Siswa Berprestasi), Bidik Misi, and Jalur Khusus. The methods are applied to obtain quality learners. There are some methods in enrolling new students of IAIN Walisongo Semarang. These methods have their characteristic.
The research question is whether there is any difference between English achievement of ELT department students enrolled through SPMB and PSSB one and the objective of the researcher in the study is to find out the differences between English achievement of ELT department students enrolled through SPMB and PSSB.
This research was quantitative in nature; because the result of the differences between English achievements of students’ enrolled through SPMB and PSSB will be express in the language of mathematic, evaluated consequently and also interpreted by appropriate statistical procedures. In this term, quantitative data referred to the use collected data. Instrument of the research was a tool or facility that was used by researcher for collecting data in order to get better result. In this research, the researcher used documentation.
From several analyses in the research it was found that Group Statistics for 2.680 PSSB class smaller than the average of SPMB background 3.146. This suggested that the reading achievement of SPMB was better reading achievement of PSSB. Group Statistics for 3.433 PSSB was smaller than the average SPMB 3.590. This suggested that listening achievement of SPMB was better than listening achievement of PSSB. Group Statistics for 2.893 PSSB was smaller than SPMB 3.069. This suggested that writing achievement of SPMB was better than writing achievement of PSSB. Group Statistics for PSSB background 3.493 was smaller than the average of SPMB background 3.529. This suggested that classroom speaking achievement SPMB was better than speaking achievement of PSSB.
The suggestions are (1) There are ways to learn English easily, interactively, and more fun, (2) The use of interesting method or way to teach is for making students enjoy the learning process, (3) The further researcher can compare the other achievement of English in other departments.
