Abstract

English is an international language used to communicate between people across countries, and it is one of Indonesia’s formal education subjects. Teaching and learning can be defined as an activity or process of delivering knowledge between educators and students using certain methods. Student perceptions can be one of the success factors of learning The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the learning system in educational institutions from offline to online learning. The changes in the learning system affect students’ perception of online learning activities. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The participants in this study were seventh-grade students of MTs NU 10 Penawaja in the even semester 2021/2022 academic year. Data collection techniques were carried out by interviews directly with the seventh-grade students and the English Teacher to determine student perceptions. The results showed that seventh-grade students' perceptions of online learning in English Lessons were negative perception. The challenges in online learning English lessons include the difficulty of participating in online learning by students of Islamic boarding schools due to the prohibition of using cell phones in Islamic boarding schools, lack of interaction between students, poor internet network and, the level of student activity is low because the learning process is through WhatsApp groups only. Thus, it can be concluded that seventh-grade students' perceptions of online learning in English Lessons are included in the poor category, with several challenges and constraints faced by students in the learning process.
