Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan dan menganalisis interpretasi Edip Yuksel dalam bukunya Qur'an: A Reformist Translation mengenai konsepsi bentuk bumi dari perspektif Al-Qur'an, serta mengevaluasi dampak pandangannya terhadap pemahaman tradisional dan agama, dan relevansinya dengan sains modern. Penelitian ini berangkat dari adanya ketidaksesuaian terjemahan kata "dahy" dalam sebagian besar versi Al-Qur'an bahasa Inggris, yang diterjemahkan sebagai "sarang" oleh mufassir tekstualis, yang seharusnya adalah “telur”. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menganalisis teks-teks Al-Qur'an yang relevan, serta kajian terhadap pandangan tradisional dan pandangan Yuksel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Yuksel berpendapat bumi berbentuk seperti telur, yang ditegaskan dalam beberapa ayat, termasuk Surah 79:30. Ia secara kritis menolak terjemahan tradisional yang mendukung konsep bumi datar, dan menyarankan bahwa penafsiran baru ini lebih sesuai dengan ilmu pengetahuan modern. Dampak interpretasi Yuksel cukup signifikan, baik terhadap pemahaman tradisional maupun pemahaman agama. Dari sudut pandang tradisional, penafsirannya mengubah pandangan kosmologi dan memengaruhi konsep orientasi spasial di permukaan bumi. Sementara itu, dalam konteks agama, pandangan Yuksel berpotensi merekonsiliasi antara agama dan sains, menggeser paradigma tafsir tradisional, dan mengubah lanskap pendidikan Islam. Namun, interpretasi ini juga dapat memicu resistensi dan kontroversi dalam komunitas agama. Secara relevansi, pandangan Yuksel memiliki hubungan erat dengan temuan-temuan sains modern, terutama dalam konsep-konsep seperti relativitas waktu, atmosfer, teori Big Bang, dan teori evolusi, yang ditegaskan dalam beberapa ayat Al-Qur'an. Interpretasi ini memberikan kerangka yang mendukung harmonisasi antara Al-Qur'an dan pengetahuan ilmiah kontemporer.
ABSTRACT:
This research aims to explain and analyze Edip Yuksel's interpretation in his book "Qur'an: A Reformist Translation" regarding the conception of the Earth's shape from the perspective of the Qur'an, as well as evaluate the impact of his view on traditional and religious understanding, and its relevance to modern science. One of Yuksel's key interpretations lies in the word "dahy" in Surah 79:30, which he argues is more accurately translated as "egg" rather than "nest." This interpretation reflects the Earth's round and slightly oblate shape, consistent with contemporary scientific findings. According to Yuksel, the classical interpretation that describes the Earth as flat is a misunderstanding that arose from the limited knowledge of early interpreters. This study employs a literature review method by analyzing relevant Qur'anic texts and examining both traditional views and Yuksel's perspectives. The results indicate that Yuksel posits the Earth is egg-shaped, as asserted in several verses, including Surah 79:30. He critically rejects traditional translations supporting the concept of a flat Earth, suggesting that this new interpretation aligns more closely with modern science. Yuksel's interpretation has a significant impact on both traditional understanding and religious thought. From a traditional perspective, his interpretation reshapes cosmological views and affects spatial orientation on Earth's surface. In a religious context, Yuksel's perspective has the potential to reconcile religion and science, shifting traditional interpretive paradigms and altering the landscape of Islamic education. However, this interpretation may also provoke resistance and controversy within religious communities. In terms of relevance, Yuksel's view closely relates to modern scientific discoveries, especially in concepts such as time relativity, the atmosphere, the Big Bang theory, and evolution theory, which are affirmed in several Qur'anic verses. This interpretation provides a framework that supports the harmonization between the Qur'an and contemporary scientific knowledge.
