Abstract

One of the pressing issues that need to be studied in science is epistemology. The study of epistemology is a philosophical concern and crucial for all disciplines, including interpretation. Tafsīr Al-Ibrīz by K.H. Bisri Muṣṭofa has several uniqueness that make it different from other interpretations, namely the Contextual Approach, where K.H. Bisri Muṣṭofa uses a very contextual approach and is by the life of the Javanese people. This study uses an epistemological approach to explore the interpretation of Al-Ibrīz by Bisri Muṣṭofa. The first focus is to describe the author’s biography and the background of writing the Tafsīr of Al-Ibrīz. The second focus is to analyze the form, source, method, pattern, and validity of the interpretation in the work. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach. The data sources used consist of primary and secondary data. Primary data are obtained from Bisri Muṣṭofa’s interpretation of Al-Ibrīz, while secondary data come from various relevant sources to complement this study. The results of the research show that this Tafsīr of Al-Ibrīz is the work of a scholar from the land of Java named Bisri Muṣṭofa, who was born in 1915 in Kampung Sawahan, Gang Palen, Rembang, Central Java, the reason why he wrote his Tafsīr is to provide understanding to everyone who wants to know the meaning or content contained in this Tafsīr of Al-Ibrīz in detail, clearly, as well as challenges in understanding the Qur’ān, especially in the Java region. The form of Tafsīr is Tafsīr Bi Al-Ma’tsur. The method used in its interpretation is the taḥlili (analytics) method. The validity of the interpretation of the interpretation of Al-Ibrīz by Bisri Muṣṭofa has three methods; the first is coherent, which means that this interpretation is considered correct as long as there is logical consistency between the propositions. Methodologically, this interpretation has characteristics that tend to be oriented towards sectarian ideology. The application of correspondence theory in Tafsīr Al-Ibrīz is reflected in how Bisri Muṣṭofa relates his interpretation to the socio-cultural reality of the society of his time. The pragmatic approach in Tafsīr Al-Ibrīz is reflected in the way Bisri Muṣṭofa presents his interpretation, which is grounded and easy for the general public to understand. The use of Javanese and contextual explanations shows an effort to ensure that this interpretation is not only of theoretical value but also applicable to the practical life of the Javanese people of their time.
