Abstract

This study examines the types, functions, and learning implications of speech acts performed by Evelyn Wang in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once. Using Searle (1969) theory and a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher found 151 utterances across different universes. The results identified five types of speech acts: directive (63), expressive (43), representative (36), commissive (8), and declarative (1), with directive being the most dominant. The functions of speech acts differ based on context. In the normal world, Evelyn often uses representative and expressive forms to communicate in daily and relational settings. In contrast, in the multiverse, she uses more directive, declarative, and expressive acts due to urgency, conflict, and emotional intensity. Pedagogically, this research supports the use of film-based materials to enhance students’ pragmatic competence. Through speech act analysis in varied contexts, secondary students can learn how context shapes meaning and apply this understanding in classroom activities such as role-plays and contextual dialogue writing, in line with the goals of communicative English teaching in Indonesia.
