Abstract
This study discusses the concept of intercession syafāˊat in the Qurˊān by exploring the interpretations of two prominent figures in the Islami world, namely Ibn Taymiyyah and Sayyid Muhammad bin Alwi al-Mālikī . Both represent two different interpretative methodologies originating from distinct schools of thought, namely Salafi and Khalafi. The primary aim of this research is to describe and analyze the differences and similarities in their interpretations of verses related to intercession, as well as the implications for the understanding of the Muslim community. This study employs a qualitative method with a thematic maudhū‘ī tafsir approach, collecting verses concerning intercession and analyzing them based on the works of both scholars. The results show that Ibn Taymiyyah’s interpretation tends to restrict the concept of intercession within a strict monotheistic context, emphasizing the absolute will of Allah and the condition of His permission, while rejecting forms of intercession that could potentially lead to shirk polytheism. Meanwhile, Sayyid Muhammad bin Alwi al-Mālikī al-Hasani understands intercession as an expression of mercy and honor granted by Allah to the prophets and the righteous, while maintaining that intercession cannot occur without Allah’s permission. These interpretative differences stem from the theological backgrounds and methodologies of each mufassir, reflecting the dynamic nature of Islamic thought in understanding the doctrine of intercession.
