Balā’ is one of the essential concepts in the Qur'an, which is often narrowly interpreted as a disaster or misfortune. In reality, the Qur'anic perspective presents balā’ as a more comprehensive concept that includes both blessings and hardships as divine tests. In many community practices, balā’ is still perceived as a punishment, whereas the Qur'an emphasizes that both good and bad events are trials intended to test faith, build character, and spiritually educate humans. This research seeks to question the interpretation of the concept of balā’ through Tafsir Al-Bayān fī Ma‘rifati Ma‘ānī al-Qur’ān, a contemporary Javanese-language tafsir by KH. Shodiq Hamzah, which uses the ijmālī method and features an adabī-ijtimā‘ī style enriched with linguistic, spiritual, and cultural dimensions. This study is qualitative in nature and employs a thematic (maudhū‘ī) approach, examining Qur'anic verses related to the concept of balā’ through categorized themes. Data were collected through document analysis and interpreted using content and discourse analysis to understand how the concept of trials is presented within the socio-spiritual framework of the interpretation. In Tafsir Al-Bayān, balā’ is classified into two major forms: balā’ in the form of goodness and hardship (balā’ ḥasan and balā’ syarr), and balā’ in the form of divine commands and prohibitions (al-amr wa al-nahy al-syar‘ī). Each category reflects a different aspect of divine testing, intended not only to challenge human endurance but also to cultivate spiritual awareness, obedience, and inner purification. The findings show two main points: first, that KH. Shodiq Hamzah sees balā’ not just as physical pain but as a part of tarbiyah ilāhiyyah (divine education) that helps build moral character and brings believers closer to God; and second, that this idea is still important today, where different kinds of good and bad experiences can be seen as tests from God. This interpretation contributes to a contextual and transformative understanding of life’s challenges, helping individuals respond to both adversity and prosperity as opportunities for spiritual growth, rather than viewing them solely as punishments or misfortunes.
