Abstract

The background of this study is an effort to know which technique is suitable to use in teaching speaking of hortatory exposition text. Teaching a foreign language is considered to be one of the most challenging teaching practices. Students are usually afraid when they have to speak English. They may feel shy or not confidence. Usually, students know nothing how to express what they want to say. Students who have learned English for several years cannot still communicate using English. So the researcher thought that there should be a solution to cope with that problem.
This study is about the use of video clip to facilitate student’s learning speaking skill in hortatory exposition text of the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Kebumen in the academic year of 2010/2011. The statement of the problem in this study is; how is the effectiveness of using video clip to facilitate students understanding on hortatory exposition text in the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Kebumen in the academic year of 2010/2011? The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of teaching speaking hortatory exposition text using video clip.
The population of the research was the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Kebumen. The research methodology was an experimental research, the samples; the experimental group (XI Social 3) and control group (XI Social 4). The XI Social 3 was taught by using video clip, while the XI Social 4 was taught without video clip. The writer gave speaking test to gather the data. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether or not there was a significance difference between students’ score in experimental group and students’ score in control group.
After the data had been collected by using test, it was found that the pre-test average of the experimental group was 62.84 and control group was 62.32. While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 75.05 and control group was 69.47. It was found that t-test was (3.481), whereas the t-table was (1.99) for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (3.481 > 1.99). It was meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, using video clip was effective media to facilitate students’ speaking skill in MAN 1 Kebumen
