Abstract

The background of this study is based on the phenomena that students’ motivation in writing descriptive text is low. It is because students think that writing is a boring activity. Teacher also just gives them score for their writing; there is no other reward to appreciate their writing. Thus, it makes them lazy to write. To improve students’ motivation in writing descriptive text, teacher needs a medium that can attract them to write. Wall magazine is one of media that can be used in teaching writing descriptive text. By using wall magazine, students will be motivated to write, because through wall magazine their writing will be seen by others. It seems like a reward because students’ descriptive writings are displayed. Automatically, they will do the best in their work. The objectives of this study are to describe the implementation of using wall magazine in improving students’ motivation in writing descriptive text and To identify the improvement of students’ motivation in writing descriptive text after being taught using wall magazine. The study was conducted at MTs Al Hidayah Getassrabi Gebog Kudus in the academic year of 2009-2010. The subjects of this study were the eighth graders class A. The number of the subject was forty-eight. Instrument that were used in collecting the data were questionnaire, documentation, observation, test and interview. The process of this research was conducted in three stages, including, pre cycle, cycle 1, and cycle 2. Pre cycle was done to know the initial condition before students given wall magazine. The planning of cycle 1 was planned after conducting pre cycle. And Cycle 2 was conducted based on the reflection results of cycle 1. The result of this research showed the improvement of the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. It could be seen from their score. The average on pre-test was 56,98, in cycle I got 64,81 and in cycle II got up to 72,29. Students’ activeness to write descriptive text also improved. It means that students’ motivation in writing descriptive was increased. So, the hypothesis can accepted. Based on the result of the analysis, the writer concludes that the use of wall magazine can improve students’ motivation in writing descriptive text. Thus, the writer recommends the using wall magazine in writing class, especially in descriptive writing.
