Abstract

The background of the study is based on the phenomena of English learning and teaching in MTs Negeri Jeketro Grobogan. They are as follow: 1) English teachers think that learning language does not require a lot of media as much as Biology, Chemistry and other subjects, 2) Picture in writing practice is used to write narrative text, procedure text, and descriptive text, 3) The students’ interest in writing skill is low, 4) Writing report text tends to be the result of actual research, 5) The students’ mastery of writing report text needs more attention from the teacher.
The problem of this research can be stated as follow: what extent is the students’ achievement in writing report text using picture of the 8th grade students of MTs Negeri Jeketro, Grobogan in the academic year of 2009/2010?
The objective of this study is to find out the students’ achievement in writing report text of the 8th grade students of MTs Negeri Jeketro, Grobogan in the academic year of 2009/2010.
This research is an experimental study. The data is obtained by giving test to the experimental class and the control class after being given different treatment. The number of the subjects is 24 in experimental class and 25 in control class. They are VIIIA as the experimental class (the students who are taught use picture), VIIIB as the control class (the students who are taught without picture). The instruments are for collecting the data input test, interview and observation. The test is for knowing students’ achievement in writing report text before and after the experiment. There are two kinds of test. They are pre-test and post test. Interview is as the second method and observation is as the last one.
Based on the data obtained, there are differences of mean between the students who were taught with the picture and who were taught without picture. The result of mean in experimental class is 90.01% and mean of control class is 76.68%. Then for knowing the significant differences both in experimental class and control class, the mean above calculated by t-test formula which the result t-count is 11.425 and t-table is 2.000. This means the result of t-count is higher than t-table. So, the students’ achievement in writing report text using picture is better than the students’ achievement in writing report text without using picture. In conclusion the use of picture especially photo/image of living things and no-living things in teaching writing of report text gives contribution to stimulate students’ ideas and help them to express their ideas in learning writing.
