Al-Qur’an sebagai kitab petunjuk banyak membahas konsepsi kebaikan moral yang berkaitan dengan humanisme di berbagai ayatnya. Namun, seringkali konsepsi tersebut tidak benar-benar dipahami karena membutuhkan pembacaan menyeluruh terhadap al-Qur’an. Di antara konsepsi kebaikan moral yang perlu dirumuskan adalah tema kesalehan dalam lingkup al-birr yang merupakan salah satu istilah moral dalam al-Qur’an yang kompleks dan paling sulit dipahami. Kajian yang mengupas konsep al-birr dari perspektif Muhammad Asad dalam The Message of the Qur’an ini dimaksudkan menjawab permasalahan: Bagaimana tafsir Muhammad Asad tentang ayat-ayat “al-birr” dalam The Message of the Qur’an? Permasalahan tersebut dibahas melalui studi tafsir tematik dengan menggunakan pendekatan historis dan analisis semantik.
Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa konsep al-birr dalam pandangan Asad berkaitan dengan level kesalehan hakiki yang diraih melalui upaya komprehensif yang termanifestasi dalam peribadatan seseorang terhadap Tuhannya, kualitas akhlak mulia, dan aksi-aksi sosial kemanusiaan yang dilandasi oleh kepercayaan teguh terhadap ajaran agama dan kesadaran akan kemahahadiran Allah. Konsep al-birr sebagai level kesalehan hakiki ini mewujud dalam berbagai dimensi kesalehan individual meliputi; akidah, syariat, dan akhlak. Juga dimensi kesalehan sosial. Dalam pemaknaannya terhadap indikator-indikator kesalehan tersebut, Muhammad Asad sering memperluas makna ayat. Dalam hal kesalehan sosial misalnya, menurut Asad, perhatian terhadap anak yatim harus ditujukan untuk memperbaiki keadaan mereka. Konsep ibn sabil dipahami dalam pengertiannya yang lebih luas mencakup buangan politik dan pengungsi. Konsep pembebasan budak (tahrir raqabah) di era modern, ketika perbudakan sudah tidak lagi ditemukan, menurut Asad secara absah bisa diperluas mencakup upaya pembebasan manusia dari belenggu hutang atau dari keadaan sangat miskin.

ABSTRACT

The Qur'an as a guide discusses many conceptions of ethico religious related to humanism in its various verses. However, this conception is often not really understood because it requires a comprehensive reading of the Qur'an. Among the conceptions of moral term that need to be formulated is the theme of piety within the scope of al-birr which is one of the most complex and difficult moral terms to understand in the Qur'an. The study, which examines the concept of al-birr from the perspective of Muhammad Asad in The Message of the Qur'an, is intended to answer the problem how Muhammad Asad interpre the verses "al-birr" in The Message of the Qur'an? These problems are discussed through thematic interpretation studies using historical approaches and semantic analysis.
The results of this study indicate that the concept of al-birr in Asad's view is related to the level of true piety achieved through comprehensive efforts manifested in one's worship of Allah, noble moral quality, and social humanitarian actions based on the awareness of His all-presence and the desire to mould one's existence in the light of this awareness. The concept of al-birr as a level of ultimate piety manifests itself in various dimensions of individual piety including; aqidah, syariah, and morals. Also the dimension of social piety. In his interpretation of the indicators of piety, Muhammad Asad often extends the meaning of the verse. In terms of social piety, for example, according to Asad, attention to orphans must be aimed to improving their condition. The concept of ibn sabil is understood in wider sense includes a person who, for any reason whatsoever, is unable to return home either temporarily or permanently. The concept of freeing of slaves (tahrir raqabah) in the modern era, when slavery was no longer found, according to Asad, it could legitimately be expanded to the efforts to liberate people from bondage of debt or from very poor conditions.
