Abstract

This study discusses the textual meaning contained in the speech delivered by Taylor Swift, who won at the “Women of the Decade” Award at the Billboard Women in Music 2019 as research object. The researcher has found the textual meaning that is realized in the spoken text and uses data collection technique, not only by analyzing the object but also complementing it with triangulation method to get more comprehensive result. This research aims to identify the Types of Theme, to explain the textual meaning, and to describe the pedagogical implication in Taylor Swift’s speech at the “Women of the Decade” Award at the Billboard Women in Music 2019. Descriptive qualitative was the method which the researcher used in this research. To gain the deeper analysis, the data were triangulated by interviewing the 10 English Education Department students as the participants to this research. The result show that the most dominant Theme used in Taylor Swift’s speech was Topical Theme, which is found 183 times, consist of 29 times Marked Theme and 154 times Unmarked Theme. The second is Textual Theme which is found 25 times. The last is Interpersonal Theme which is found 29 times. The pedagogical implication of this study was the use of speech text provided a deeper understanding of advanced students who study discourse and helps the students understanding the Textual Meaning, so the students can analyze the meaning realized in the spoken text and they will get the main point of the clause.
