Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study intended to investigate (1) the language learning strategies used by learners of English as a foreign language and (2) how they use the strategies. This study aimed to investigate students' learning strategies in learning English used by 95 students in the final year of junior high school, 39 females and 56 males in the academic year of 2022/2023. The data were gathered through Strategy Inventory Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire version 7.0 interviews and observation as the research instrument. The result of the analysis of questionnaire data reveals that the students used all the learning strategies with total number memory strategy (16,7%), cognitive strategy (16,5%), compensation strategy (16,3%), metacognitive strategy (17,1 %), affective strategy (15,9%) and social strategy (17,3%). Among the strategies, social strategies had the highest percentage (17,3%) and the most extensive total score was 3,28. Meanwhile, based on interview and observation data, almost all students answered that they used all language learning strategies. Additionally, the strategy most frequently used in social strategies is asking questions to the teacher of English in the English learning process and cooperating with peers or groups for discussion their learning process.
