Kalender Kesultanan Yogyakarta pernah difungsikan sebagai pengorganisasi waktu ibadah karena perumusan kalender tersebut bertujuan untuk menyelaraskan perayaan upacara adat dengan hari besar Islam, Idul Fitri dan Idul Adha. Namun saat ini Kesultanan Yogyakarta melalui website resminya menyatakan bahwa kalender tersebut hanya digunakan sebagai pengorganisasi waktu perayaan upacara adat. Hal tersebut kontradiktif terhadap tujuan perumusan kalender tersebut. Namun faktanya masih ada kalangan internal Kesultanan Yogyakarta yang masih memfungsikan kalender tersebut sebagai pengorganisasi waktu awal bulan Poso dan Sawal.
Permasalahan yang dikaji adalah 1) bagaimana perubahan fungsi kalender Jawa Islam Sultan Agungan di Kesultaan Yogyakarta? 2) bagaimana ketepatan Kalender Jawa Islam Sultan Agungan? Metode yang digunakan ialah kualitatif lapangan dengan pendekatan Sosiologi dan Ilmu Falak. Hasil penelitian di Kesultanan Yogyakarta menemukan bahwa kalender Jawa Islam Sultan Agungan telah mengalami perubahan secara fungsi. Ada yang memfungsikan kalender tersebut sebagai pengorganisasi waktu ibadah dan adat, ada juga yang hanya memfungsikan kalender tersebut sebagai pengorganisasi waktu upacara adat. Kalender tersebut tidak tepat jika difungsikan sebagai pengorganisasi waktu ibadah karena Tingkat ketepatan kalender Jawa Islam Sultan Agungan akan berkurang seiring berjalannya waktu. Hal tersebut terjadi karena kalender Jawa Islam Sultan Agungan dirumuskan dengan metode ḥisab ‘urfi yang tidak memperhitungkan posisi benda langit yang sebenarnya.

ABSTRACT:
The Yogyakarta Sultanate calendar once functioned as an organizer of worship times because the formulation of the calendar was aimed at aligning traditional ceremonial celebrations with Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. However, currently the Sultanate of Yogyakarta through its official website states that the calendar is only used as an organizer for traditional ceremonial celebrations. This is contradictory to the purpose of the calendar formulation. However, the fact is that there are internal circles within the Sultanate of Yogyakarta who still function the calendar as the organizer for the start of the months of Poso and Sawal.
The problems studied were 1) how did the function of the Javanese Islamic calendar of Sultan Agung change in the Yogyakarta Sultanate? 2) how accurate is the Javanese Islamic Calendar of Sultan Agung? The method used is field qualitative with the approach of Sociology and Astronomy. The results of research in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta found that the Islamic Javanese calendar of Sultan Agungan had undergone changes in function. There are those who function the calendar as an organizer of worship and customary time, there are also those who only function the calendar as an organizer of traditional ceremony time. The calendar is not appropriate if it functions as an organizer of worship time because the level of accuracy of the Islamic Javanese calendar of Sultan Agung will decrease over time. This happened because the Islamic Javanese calendar of Sultan Agungan was formulated using the ḥisab 'urfi method which did not take into account the actual position of the celestial bodies.
