Abstract

Kajian ini dialatarbelakangi ketidakefektifan pembelajaran bahasa dari metode tradisional. Metode ini tidak memberi wadah bagi santri untuk mempraktikkan bahasa tujuan sehingga membuat mereka terasing dari bahasa target. Atas dasar ini, peneliti melaksanakan penelitian dengan mengembangkan model pengajaran bahasa Dual-Language Sinking guna menjembatani pembelajaran dengan kehidupan sehari-hari peserta didik untuk mencapai kompetensi-kompetensi bahasa yang diharapkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merumuskan, mengembangkan model hipotetik, dan menemukan model yang ideal dari model Dual-Language Sinking serta mengukur efektivitasnya. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dan pengembangan (research and development) dengan memanfaatkan pendekatan kualitatif dan kuantitatif untuk analisis datanya. Penelitian ini berhasil merumuskan, mengembangkan, dan menemukan model ini. Beberapa fitur dari pengembangan model ini adalah hanya menjadikan bahasa target, Arab dan Inggris, sebagai bahasa pengantar dan keseharian, memberikan input bahasa yang intensif, menyediakan lingkungan belajar bahasa yang nyata, mengajukan materi-materi pembelajaran bahasa yang fungsional, menoleransi periode hening yang dialami santri, dan menekankan pada tes performansi. Uji Efektivitas dilaksanakan dengan mengujicobakan model di tiga lokasi. Satu lokasi uji coba terbatas yakni di PP. Yanbu’ul Qur’an Menawan dan uji coba lebih luas di dua lokasi yakni di PP. Yanbu’ul Qur’an Muria dan PP Nurul Qur’an MAN I Kudus. Berdasarkan uji coba yang telah dilakukan, tingkat efektivitas model dalam meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa santri pada kategori “sedang” dengan angka rata-rata di tiga tempat tersebut 0,53591 untuk bahasa Inggris dan 0,53518 untuk bahasa Arab. Model ini memerlukan tindak lanjut berupa sososialisasi kepada pesantren-pesantren yang merintis program bilingual sehingga bisa menjadi alternatif melaksanakan program ini.

ABSTRACT:
This study was motivated by the failure of traditional methods regarding language learning. These methods do not provide a medium for students to practice the language; thus, they alienate them from the target language. Based on this basis, the researcher contrived to conduct research by developing a language teaching model called a Dual-Language Sinking model to bridge language learning with the daily language needs of students to achieve the expected language skills and competencies. This study aims to formulate and develop a hypothetical model by exploring the ideal Dual-Language Sinking model and measuring its effectiveness. This study employs a Research and Development (R&D) method by utilizing qualitative and quantitative approaches in the data analysis. As a result, the researcher was successful in formulating, developing, and identifying an effective Dual-Language Sinking model. Some of the features of this model development include using only the target languages, Arabic and English, as the language of instruction and everyday communication, providing intensive language input, providing an authentic language learning environment, proposing functional language learning materials, tolerating periods of silence experienced by students, and emphasizing performance tests. The effectiveness test was carried out by testing the model at three locations. A limited trial location was held in PP. Yanbu'ul Qur'an Menawan and more comprehensive trials were done in two other locations, namely in PP. Yanbu'ul Qur'an Muria and MAN I Kudus Boarding School. Based on the trials that have been carried out, the level of effectiveness of the model in increasing students' language competence is in the moderate category, with an average score in the three places of 0.53591 for English and 0.53518 for Arabic. This model should be subsequently socialized to Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) that implementing bilingual education. Thus, it can potentially be alternative for them to apply this teaching model.
