Abstract

Lahirnya pendidikan Islam masyarakat kelas menengah perkotaan dimulai sekitar abad ke 20 yang dimotori oleh kalangan muslim kelas menengah pada era orde baru. Karakteristik jenis pendidikan ini adalah bercirikhas Islam dengan pengelolaan swasta dengan berbiaya mahal. Tujuan penelitan ingin menjawab pertanyaan: 1) Mengapa LPI Hidayatulloh dan YPI Al-Azhar 29 mendirikan lembaga pendidikan untuk masyarakat kelas menengah perkotaan? 2) Mengapa masyarakat muslim kelas menengah memilih LPI Hidayatulloh dan YPI AL-Azhar 29? 3) Bagaimana cara LPI Hidayatulloh dan YPI Al-Azhar 29 dalam mempertahankan eksistensinya? Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif lapangan dengan pendekatan sosio fenomenologis. Metode pengambilan data dengan wawancara, observasi partisipatoris dan dokumentasi.
Hasil penelitian menemukan, Pertama adanya kondusifitas kota Semarang mencakup aspek demografi, ekonomi, sosial dan budaya yang mendukung perkembangan lembaga pendidikan Islam swasta dan keyakinan kuat pada kalangan masyarakat kelas menengah bahwa pendidikan adalah jalan perjuangan paling realistis di era modern dalam mensyiarkan Islam yang bernilai ibadah dan ekonomis. Kedua, lembaga pendidikan Islam masyarakat muslim kelas menengah bersifat elitis dan memiliki posisi strategis di tengah masyarakat perkotaan. Ketiga, strategi mempertahankan eksistensi lembaga adalah; penggabungan ilmu-ilmu umum dan Islam (holistic), penguatan identitas Islam dan unstable religious ideology (ideologi keagamaan yang tidak tetap melainkan dapat bergeser searah dengan konteks sosial yang berkembang).

ABSTRACT:
The birth of Islamic education in urban middle class communities began around the 20th century, driven by middle class Muslims in the New Order era. The characteristics of this type of education are Islamic with expensive private management. The aim of the research is to answer the questions: 1) Why did LPI Hidayatulloh and YPI Al-Azhar 29 establish educational institutions for the urban middle class? 2) Why did the middle class Muslim community choose YPI AL-Azhar 29 and LPI Hidayatulloh? 3) How do YPI Al-Azhar 29 and LPI Hidayatulloh maintain their existence? This type of research is qualitative field research with a phenomological descriptive method. Data collection methods include interviews, participatory observation and documentation.
The research results found, Firstly, the educational aspect is believed to be the most realistic way of struggle in the modern era in broadcasting Islam which has religious and economic value. Second, Islamic educational institutions for middle class Muslim communities are elitist, that is, they are seen as Islamic educational institutions that are able to represent the characteristics, needs and hopes of the middle class. Third, the strategy to maintain the existence of institutions by strengthening Islamist, modernist and unstable ideological identities. This means that Islamic values and modern technology are emphasized more in the educational process. Meanwhile, religious ideology is not an aspect that must be maintained and fought for but can change in line with the developing sosial context.
