Kodifikasi dan penyederhanaan Qiraat Sab’ah Ibnu Mujahid (245-324 H) sempat menuai kontroversi dalam bidang Qiraat Al-Qur’an secara khusus. Penyederhanaannya yang diduga oleh mayoritas ulama sebab kemasyhuran tujuh Qari pilihannya kala itu, tidaklah sesimpel demikian jika ditinjau melalui teori kritik-historis Ibnu Khaldun atau yang lebih populer dengan istilah Al-‘Umrān. Kajian ini bermaksud untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan berikut: 1). Apa saja faktor-faktor penyederhanaan tujuh Qiraat Ibnu Mujahid perspektif kritik-historis Ibnu Khaldun?; 2). Bagaimana motivasi Ibnu Mujahid untuk menuliskan kitab Al-Sab’ah dalam perspektif kritik-historis Ibnu Khaldun?. Dua persoalan ini dibahas melalui studi kepustakaan dengan mempertimbangkan kitab Al-Sab’ah fī al-Qirā’at karya Ibnu Mujahid sendiri sebagai sumber data primer. Keseluruhan data kajian ini dianalisis lebih dalam melalui metode dokumentasi serta berdasar pada pendekatan filosofis-historis melalui teori ṭabī’at al-‘umrān yang digagas oleh Ibnu Khaldun.
Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa: 1). Faktor penyederhanaan tujuh Qiraat tersebut tidak hanya berdasar pada alasan kemasyhuran tujuh Qari saja. Tetapi, terdapat empat alasan lain sebagai latar belakang penyederhanaannya, yakni: faktor antropologi, faktor kondisi pemerintahan, faktor geografi atau wilayah dan faktor peradaban ilmu pengetahuan. 2). Terdapat setidaknya tiga motivasi yang menarik Ibnu Mujahid dalam menuliskan kitabnya. Pertama, tuntutan kondisi di mana penulisan kitab tersebut dipengaruhi oleh sejumlah kondisi, di antaranya adalah masa rentang hidup Ibnu Mujahid dan masih sedikitnya kodifikasi kitab tentang Qiraat kala itu. Kedua, masih sedikitnya kodifikasi mengenai Qiraat secara khusus. Sebab fakta sejarah mengatakan bahwa tidak hanya Ibnu Mujahid yang menulis kitab khusus Qiraat kala itu. Ketiga, adanya perbedaan kondisi dari sejumlah penulis kitab-kitab Qiraat yang menuntut Ibnu Mujahid menulis kitab berikut penyederhanaan Qarinya.

ABSTRACT:
The codification and simplification of Ibn Mujahid's Qiraat Sab'ah (245-324 H) caused controversy in the field of Qiraat Al-Qur'an specifically. The simplification, which was suspected by the majority of scholars because of the fame of the seven Qari they chose at that time, is not that simple if viewed through Ibn Khaldun's historical-critical theory or what is more popularly known as Al-'Umrān. This study intends to answer the two following questions: 1). What are the simplifying factors of Ibn Mujahid's seven Qiraat from Ibn Khaldun's historical-critical perspective?; 2). What was Ibn Mujahid's motivation for writing the book Al-Sab'ah from Ibn Khaldun's historical-critical perspective?. These two issues are discussed through literature study by considering the book Al-Sab'ah fī al-Qirā'at by Ibn Mujahid himself as a primary data source. All data from this study were analyzed more deeply through documentation methods and based on a philosophical-historical approach through the ṭabī'at al-'umrān theory initiated by Ibnu Khaldun.
The results show that: 1). The simplification factor for the seven Qiraats is not only based on the reasons for the fame of the seven Qari. There are four other reasons as the background for the simplification: anthropological factors, government condition factors, geographic or regional factors and scientific civilization factors. 2). There are at least three motivations that attracted Ibnu Mujahid in writing his book. First, demand conditions where the writing of the book was influenced by several conditions, including the life span of Ibn Mujahid and the lack of codification of books about Qiraat at that time. Second, there is still little codification regarding Qiraat specifically. Because historical facts say that it was not only Ibn Mujahid who wrote a special book on Qiraat at that time. Third, there were differences in the conditions of several writers of the Qiraat books which required Ibn Mujahid to write the book following the simplification of the Qari.
