Abstract

Migrant students are vulnerable to experiencing loneliness due to physical separation from their families and previously established social networks. This condition necessitates the presence of adequate internal and external capacities to maintain psychological well-being. This study aimed to examine the relationship between emotion regulation and family functioning with loneliness among migrant students at the Faculty of Psychology and Health, UIN Walisongo Semarang. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 128 migrant students aged 18–25 years, who were at least in their third semester and lived apart from their families. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling based on predefined inclusion criteria. The instruments utilized in this study included the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire adopted from Radde et al. (2021), the Family Assessment Device adapted by Pradina and Lubis (2024), and the UCLA Loneliness Scale adapted from Hudiyana et al. (2021). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple correlation techniques. The results showed a significant negative relationship between emotion regulation and loneliness (r = –0.491, p < 0.05), as well as between family functioning and loneliness (r = –0.397, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the results of multiple correlation analysis revealed that emotion regulation and family functioning simultaneously had a significant relationship with loneliness (R = 0.636; R² = 0.405; p < 0.05), indicating that both variables collectively explained 40.5% of the variance in loneliness among migrant students. These findings imply the importance of enhancing emotion regulation capacity and maintaining family functioning as part of prevention and intervention strategies to reduce loneliness among migrant students.
