Abstract
Some common challenges in teaching English at the elementary school level, like Limited teaching resources such as books, learning media, and technological facilities in some areas, especially in rural areas, and the lack of use of English in daily activity, can hinder the process of teaching English to elementary school children. This study aims to explain the primary challenges faced by teachers in elementary schools in rural area with specific religious environment. This study used a qualitative method with a descriptive research design. Participant in this study were two of English teachers at MI Islamiyah P2A Kerek-Tuban of East Java in the academic year 2024/2025. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and interviews. The results showed that there were five challenges; limited english proficiency among teachers, inadequate teaching resources, cultural and linguistic barriers, large class size, and lack of profecional development opportunities, that affect the teachers' delivery of material in the classroom. Teachers with minimal support and skills are more likely to experience difficulties in delivering material. So learning becomes less effective, and students cannot grasp the material well. This research can provide insight for policymakers to formulate policies that better support English language education in rural areas. The government can also introduce scholarship or incentive programs for teachers who teach in remote areas, to overcome the problem of a shortage of qualified teaching staff.
