ABSTRACT

Vocabulary has become significant component in learning English. In education, the challenges require teachers and students to implement a curriculum that is in line with the times and science and technology. Music is familiar for everyone. YouTube as one of the most used-website on the internet provide many songs in it. It is believed that using songs from YouTube to help students learn vocabulary could potentially render the process somewhat easier. Reading-while-Listening (RWL) strategy applied to achieve success in the research. The aim of this study is to find out the effectiveness of reading while listening to English popular songs from YouTube towards students’ vocabulary competency. A quantitative method employed in this research, with the design of pre-experimental. In total of 22 students were recruited from a junior high school of H. Isriati Semarang to be in one group of experimental class. The data collected by doing a pre-test and a post-test, that in between the researcher implemented a treatment. The data showed as for the pre-test, the mean is 65.7. Meanwhile, the mean increased on the post-test up to 78.6. In conclusion, the use of RWL to English popular songs on YouTube gave a positive effect on students’ vocabulary effectively.
