Abstract
One of the four-basic skills of learning English is speaking. However, one of the major challenges in English language learning is the low level of interaction and engagement, both among students and between students and teachers. Many students hesitate to communicate in English due to a lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, or limited vocabulary. This study explores the integration of group discussion into EMI Class to enhance the students’ engagement in teaching speaking English among 8th-grade students at SMP Askhabul Kahfi Semarang. This research investigates the integration of group discussion into EMI class to Engage Students in Speaking English, and also Students’ challenges during group discussion and how they overcome it. Employing a qualitative descriptive case study, data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documents. The findings demonstrate that the integration of group discussion into EMI Class serves as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) for the students to speak English as they feel more motivated to speak English, helping them be more confident, and make the more engaged during class. Students reported some suggestions for the discussion session. However, there are some challenges that they’ve faced, but they have ways to overcome it.
