Abstract

Music and song are included in teaching media. The use of music and song in classroom can stimulate very positive associations to the study of a language. They can also make the classroom situation more enjoyable for students and increase the students’ interest to learn. Indonesian pop songs were chosen here because many of the students had listened to it. It can stimulate their motivation to learn, and help the students get an idea when they write a descriptive text.
The problem of this research is how much effective is the use of Indonesian pop songs to arouse students’ imagination in writing descriptive text?
The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of Indonesian pop songs to arouse students’ imagination in writing descriptive text.
The research used experimental method. This research was conducted at MTs Salafiyah Kajen Margoyoso Pati. The subjects of this study were the students at MTs Salafiyah Kajen Margoyoso Pati in two classes. They were treated as experimental and control groups. The number of the subjects was 32 in experimental group and 34 in control group. The techniques of data collection used by the writer were test and observation.
Based on the statistical data, the writer got a description that the experimental class which was given treatment using Indonesian pop songs as media got higher score, it was 81.3 compared with the control class which did not get some treatment, it was 67.5. Based on the t-test with the standard significance of 5%, it is found = 5.59 with = 2.00. Because > , so there is real difference of result between learning writing descriptive text using Indonesian pop songs and learning without using song. In other word, learning writing descriptive text using song is effective. The correlation between the use of Indonesian pop songs to teach descriptive writing (variable X) and the students’ imagination in writing descriptive text and the effectiveness of using Indonesian pop songs to teach descriptive writing (variable Y) shows = 5.59 with = 2.00. Because > , it gives additional proof to effectiveness of using song in teaching descriptive writing.
