Sampai saat ini, penentuan posisi atau titik koordinat suatu tempat di permukaan Bumi dengan bantuan teknologi yakni GPS (Global Positioning System) ataupun google earth dirasa masih bersifat konsumtif pasif. Jika melihat penggunaan teknologi GPS dan google earth baik oleh para praktisi ilmu falak maupun masyarakat lainnya hanya sebatas konsumtif tanpa adanya upaya analitis kritis. Kesulitan timbul manakala sistem satelit yang tersedia pada GPS ataupun data yang ditampilkan pada google earth dalam kondisi error mistakes. Terbatasnya akses GPS maupun google earth pun sangat terasa bagi masyarakat yang berada di daerah yang belum terjamah teknologi. Kemungkinan yang bisa dilakukan masyarakat yang kesulitan akses tersebut adalah menggunakan metode penentuan titik koordinat yang lebih praktis yakni tongkat istiwa’. Untuk itu, sangat perlu dibahas bagaimana teori, metode, dan aplikasi tongkat istiwa’ dengan perbandingannya dengan GPS dan google earth.
Tesis ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang bersifat deskriptif analitik. Dalam rangka mengulas lebih mendalam baik dari segi teori, aplikasi maupun akurasi tongkat istiwa’, maka dalam analisisnya dilakukan perbandingan dengan GPS dan google earth. Oleh karena itu kajian ini fokus pada penelitian lapangan dengan sumber data primer hasil pengamatan dan dokumentasi menjadi data sekunder. Kemudian dilakukan analisis deskriptif-analitik matematis untuk diketahui kajian tongkat istiwa’ dalam fungsinya menentukan titik koordinat Bumi.
Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tongkat istiwa’ adalah salah satu alternatif penentuan titik koordinat Bumi yang memiliki teori perhitungan spherical trigonometry. Sedangkan GPS dan google earth menggunakan prinsip keilmuan geodesi yang lebih teliti dari tongkat istiwa’. Berdasarkan pada perbandingan ke tiga metode penentuan titik koordinat Bumi tersebut, maka secara teori terbagi menjadi dua keilmuan yakni astronomi yang digunakan oleh tongkat istiwa’ dan geodesi yang digunakan oleh GPS dan google earth. Sedangkan dalam segi aplikasi, metode metode paling praktis dan akurat dari ketiga alat itu secara berurutan adalah GPS, google earth, dan tongkat istiwa’.

ABSTRACT

Until now, the using of GPS (Global Positioning System) and google earth to determination of the position on the Earth's surface is still passive consumptive. The using of GPS technology and google earth both by practitioners and other community astronomy was limited to consumer without any analytical efforts critical. Difficulties arise when the system is available on the GPS satellites or data displayed on google earth in an error condition mistakes. Limited access to GPS and google earth was very pronounced for people who are in an unspoiled area of technology. Possibility can the community who lack access are using the method of determining the coordinates of a more practical the istiwa’ stick. Because of this problems, the study of the theories, methods, and applications istiwa’ stick by comparison with GPS and google earth is very important.
This thesis is a qualitative research which using the descriptive and analytical. In order to review more in depth both in terms of theory, application and accuracy of the istiwa’ stick, then the analysis is done in comparison with GPS and google earth. Therefore this study focused on field research with observations as primary data sources and documentation as secondary data. Then performed a mathematical analysis of the descriptive-analytic study to know the istiwa’ stick in the function of determining the coordinates of the Earth.
Results of this study conclude that istiwa’ stick is an alternative determination of the coordinates of the Earth that has a theoretical calculation of spherical trigonometry. While GPS and google earth using geodetic science principles more thoroughly than istiwa’ stick. Based on a comparison of the three methods of determining the coordinates of the Earth, then it is theoretically divided into two theories ; astronomical science that is used by istiwa’ stick and geodetic science that is used by GPS and google earth. While in terms of applications, the most practical method and accurate method of the three tools in sequence it is GPS, google earth and istiwa' stick.
