The existence of the celestial sphere baccalaureate program or falak syar'i program at the University of Malaya since 2002 has been giving out a lot of contribution to the development of astronomy in Malaysia, especially in the University of Malaya. In 2010 the program has been changed into a baccalaureate program or Islamic astronomy program. The amendment has changed the pattern of falak syar’i it study tend to his study Islamic traditional of astronomy into modern astronomy. In this case, there has been a development that needs to be investigated further, both in general mapun specifically. Given the complexity of the studies in astronomy, the study specifically raised about the development in determining the direction of qibla.
The purpose of this research is knowing the general form of development in Islamic astronomy program and in particular (1) to describe how the development model of the depelovement of falak syar’i towards astronomy in determining the qibla direction, (2) determine the substance of the development of falak syar’i towards astronomy in determining qibla. The methodology used (1) qualitative interactive approach to qualitative case studies and historical (2) The analysis technique used is descriptive analysis.
The results showed first, model development in general in Islamic astronomy program is to develop the study of modern astronomy without disregarding traditional studies many new things in development, both in the establishment of curriculum, teaching, practice and astronomi equipment. In particular on the development model of the celestial sphere shar'ī towards astronomy in determining the qibla direction is the development model that is focused on determining the qibla direction modern both before and after the program is subject to change. Second, in general the substance of change has been the development experience to show the relationship between syari'aih science, astronomy, and science. Specifically about the substance of the development of falak syar’i towards astronomy in determining the direction of qibla (1) The calculation used in determining the direction of the qibla follow the calculations specified by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM). (2) the subject is taught in determining the direction of qibla modern in lecture obtained, while the traditional qibla direction determination is obtained through a special program end.
