Abstract

The background of the study in this research is based on the phenomenon that students was difficulties in writing news item text because the teacher just explained the material orally without supported by teaching aids. The result was the students’ ability to write is low. To improve students’ ability in news item text, the teacher needs strategy through using an aid that facilitates on writing news item text. Video is one of aid that was used in teaching writing news item text. It was allows students to look at situations for beyond their classroom. This is especially useful if students want to see. It was a good media to give students a chance to see something new, like what kinds of news in other countries, what they wear and others.
The objectives of this study are to identify what extent video contribute to the development of the ability in writing a news item text of the first students of MA. Manbaul Ulum Sinoman Pati in the academic year of 2011/2012.
This research was a classroom action research. The research collected the data was carried out through observation and test. It was done through two cycles with different types of video.
The research finding showed a difference in achievement of students’ writing before and after being treated by using video. The average of the students’ result in pre-cycle was 57, 8, in the cycle one test was 67, 04, and in cycle two test was 74. The students were more active and interested in studying when they used video compared to when they did not use media. They responded the lesson well and enjoyed in the learning process.
Finally the result of this research shows that students’ ability was improved in each cycle after they were taught using video. They were better in their news item text’s writing. It was signed by their improvements of each writing component, i.e: content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic.
