Abstract

Background of the study is based on the phenomena that there are some kindergartens that introduce English for their students. Although there is no syllabus the English subject in Kindergarten level. So, the researcher is interested in the teaching and learning process in Kindergarten level, especially at Hj. Isriati 2 Kindergarten Semarang, because in this school, the students learn English subject.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the English language teaching learning at Hj. Isriati 2 Kindergarten classroom in terms of teaching materials, teaching methods, learning assessments. This study uses qualitative approach because the data are descriptive in the forms of written and spoken. It was conducted at Hj. Isriati 2 Kindergarten Semarang in academic year of 2012/2013. The data are collected by some techniques; observation, interview, and documentation.
The result of the study shows some findings. that the characteristics of English language teaching materials, methods, and learning assessments at the Hj. Isriati 2 kindergarten mostly meet the principles of English language teaching learning for very young learners. The teaching materials about English subject is thematic in the syllabus cover the vocabulary of everything related with the students’ immediate environment , e.g. daily things and events. The textbooks are used as complementary material with pictures, and concrete physical objects as teaching aids. The teaching method used is eclectic; i.e. the combination of various methods, among other, Communicative Language Teaching, Sing a Song Teachnique, Total Physical Respond, and Question and Answer method. For successfulness in teaching learning, the teacher makes assessments both formal and informal with techniques and feedback appropriate to very young learners, but, the English teacher’s did not make a lesson plan, she just made a note for the planning of teaching and learning process.
Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests that in English language teaching and learning at Hj. Isriati 2 Kindergarten Semarang, the teacher must create situation enjoyable, fun, and interesting as possible and it will be better that the teacher made a lesson plan in every meeting. So, the decision of teaching materials, teaching method, teachers’ instruction, learning assessment, should be structured appropriately and consider the characteristics of the learners.
