Abstract

The research is proposed to analyze the English summative test for whole items; multiple choice and essay test, because the writer found many problems especially in the second grade of MA Uswatun Hasanah Semarang. Almost all of students commented that the test is so difficult. Thus, many students got low score. The writer tried to investigate this problem and wanted to know whether the test fulfills the criteria of a good test in term of their content validity, reliability, practicality and their item analysis. This study is categorized a quantitative research because the writer used some numerical data which were analyzed statistically. This research employed descriptive analysis because it is intended to describe the test items on the English Summative test of MA Uswatun Hasanah Semarang made by MGMP LP Ma’arif NU of Semarang district for the second grade students at odd semester 2013/2014. The result of this analysis found that the contents of the test had covered adequately to the indicators which were recommended in the syllabus. The test is called reliable at both test items and it had practicality in simple and complete categories. The difficulty level at both test items in the rank of moderate level. Meanwhile, the discriminating power of the test was not good at both test items and the distractor analysis in the test works effectively. From six criteria to be a good test, just discriminating power which did not fulfill the criteria of good tests. The cause many students got low score, did not come from the test itself but it may come from almost all of students who did not master the material being measured, yet. Based on the research, the writer infers that the test makers should be more selective in making the test and revise the test items that donot fulfill the criteria of a good test. The test can be well constructed and can be used as a valuable teaching device.
