Abstract

Anxiety is described by psychologists as a subjective feeling of tension, apprehension, nerveousness and worry associated with an arousal of the autonomic nervous system. In speaking class, speaking anxiety is a common phenomena that happen with foreign language learners. This study was carried out to explain effects of EFL learners’ speaking anxiety on their speaking performance of EFL at the third grade of MTs NU 02 Al-Ma’arif Boja. Specifically, identify what factors that may contribute to EFL learners’ speaking anxiety and if there is any significant effect of EFL learners’ speaking anxiety on their speaking performance. The method used quantitative method. 62 learners’ from two classes were selected as the participants. The data were gathered through questionnaire, learners’ speaking score that obtained from English teacher, and interview. The findings of this research showed that the highest number of learners’ level of speaking anxiety comes to the moderate level and the highest number of learners’ speaking score comes to the moderate level. The result of calculating correlation between students’ anxiety and their speaking score was r=-520. it means that the strength of correlation is moderate correlation. From SPSS 16 calculation the writer get N.Sig=.000, where significance<0.05. The hypothesis accepted was the Alternative Hypothesis (H1), there is a significant negative effect of EFL learners’ speaking anxiety on their speaking performance. While the data of interview showed factors that affect EFL learners’ speaking anxiety are they do not understand the material and do not prepare well, they also spoke of their fear of making mistake and being ridiculed by friends.
