Abstract

This thesis discusses the effectiveness of teaching English nouns using Teletubbies movie to the fourth grade of elementary school. The background of the study in this research is based on the phenomena that students in SD Tambakaji 04 Semarang usually get bored in learn vocabulary especially concrete nouns. So the teacher should device a good exercise or way of teaching concrete nouns. Learning vocabulary at elementary school can be done through many ways, so the researcher teaches vocabulary using Teletubbies movie. The movie may become an alternative way to teach English noun in the beginning level. It is good for students because they like to learn using visual aid. The study is aimed at responding the question: How is the effectiveness of teaching “NOUN” vocabulary through movie at the fourth grade of SD Tambakaji 04 Semarang in academic year of 2012/ 2013. The objective of the study is to know the effectiveness of teaching “NOUN” vocabulary through movie at the fourth grade of SD Tambakaji 04 Semarang.
The number of the subjects is twenty in each class. IV B is experimental class (the students who are taught using Teletubbies movie), and IV C is control class (the students who are not taught using Teletubbies movie).
The instruments used to collect the data were: documentation and test. The documentation was used to get the data such as the students’ name, lesson plan, etc. Test was used to know the students’ competence before and after the experiments. There are two kinds of test. They are pre – test and post – test.
The result of the research using movie as technique in teaching nouns was effective. There was a significant difference in the achievement between students in class IV B (experimental class) and students in class IV C (control class). It is showed from the mean of experimental class higher than control class (83.17 > 74.67). The test of hypothesis using t – test formula shows the value of the t – test is higher than the value of the t – table. The value is (4.721 > 1.67). The hypothesis is accepted. So movie is the effective medium to improve students’ understanding on the vocabulary especially “NOUNS”.
