Abstract
Learning idiom becomes a certain difficulty by many students because its meaning is unpredictable, so they feel uninterested to learn idioms; whereas understanding idiom is very essential for having smooth communication. The purposes of this study are to analyze the types of idiomatic expressions found in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen and explain the meaning of idiomatic expressions found in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. The method of this research using a descriptive qualitative method which is described the idiomatic expressions found in the Pride and Prejudice novel. To collect the data, the researcher used documentation because the researcher collected the data from sentences that contained idiomatic expressions in the novel. To analyze the data, the researcher used literature study technique according to Muhammad Nafi Annury’s journal. The activities in data analysis were quoting and analyzing idioms. The results showed that there were one hundred and thirty idiomatic expressions. From eight types of idiomatic expressions, I found only five in the Pride and Prejudice novel. The most frequently found was fixed statements, namely one hundred and twenty-three idioms, and cliches were four idioms. The writer did not find the simile, trinomial, and other languages. The meanings of idiom were literal meaning and idiomatic meaning depending on the context of the sentence. English lecturer can implement the results while they are teaching idiomatic expressions. It can make the students aware that idiom is very important to learn because mastering idiom can enrich the vocabulary, and we can apply it in speaking and writing activities.
