Abstract

The aims of the study are to analyze the kinds and meanings of figurative languages in Taylor Swift’s album Lover, also describe the students’ opinions on the way these research findings facilitate their learning of figurative languages.This study uses qualitative design with using content analysis to collect the data. In the study, the researcher collected the data through document study and interview. The previous study which only focused on literature without any pedagogical implications. On the other hand, this study has pedagogical implications for English subject. The kinds of figurative language included in the study are simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, synecdoche, and paradox, and symbol. The data analysis showed that the metaphor is predominantly used in the songs.The meaning of figurative languages in the songs are so interesting. For example in the lyric “I’d be just like Leo in Saint-Tropez. The author makes a comparison between herself with Leo. Leo here is Leonardo Di Caprio. She draws a big figures to seek attention by using figurative languages which is not everyone knows who Leo is. The students’ opinions are classified into (1) belief (belief about something),(2) attitudes (what a person actually feels),(3) perceptions. In class, students admit that through working on quizzes and discussions, their level of understanding about figurative languages increases rapidly. They believe this research findings can facilitate their learning in the figurative languages class.
