Abstract

Exercises are important to enable students to master English skills, especially listening. When giving exercises the teacher should examine whether the exercises are relevant or not with some aspects considered in listening exercise. In this final project, the writer focuses on the listening exercises presented in Look Ahead 2 (English Course Book for Senior High School Students Year XI). It is an English textbook for the eleventh grade students of senior high school.
The objective of this study is to evaluate listening exercises in Look Ahead 2 in terms of the kinds of tests, KTSP curriculum, basic competence in listening skills, kinds of classroom listening, and types of listening exercise, teach-ability, presence of example, aims, and kinds of practice exercise.
This study is a library research using content analysis. Subjects of this research are 17 listening exercises which are displayed in the Look Ahead 2.
The data were collected from the course book of Look Ahead 2 (English Course Book for Senior High School Students Year XI) published by Erlangga. After getting data, the researcher analyzed the data by using nine aspects of listening exercise. They are: the kinds of tests, KTSP curriculum, basic competence in listening skills, kinds of classroom listening, and types of listening exercise, teach-ability, and presence of example, aims, and kinds of practice exercise.
From the analysis the writer found that in term of the kinds of tests, there are 7 discrete tests, 3 communicative tests and 4 combinations between both. In terms of KTSP curriculum, all of the listening exercise is demanded in listening based KTSP curriculum of Senior High School Grade Year XI. In terms of basic competence in listening skills, kinds of classroom listening and types of listening exercises are sufficient enough to improve listening skill because the listening exercises of Look Ahead 2 covers all of those aspects. In terms of teach-ability, there are 2 listening exercises which are not teachable and while there are 3 of 17 listening exercises provide example. The aim of each exercises are based on the material which is taught to the students. In terms of kinds of practice exercise, there are 7 Controlled Exercises, while 7 are Guided Exercises. So from the findings, the listening exercises in Look Ahead 2 are relevant with those aspects of listening exercise.
