Abstract

Code-switching occurs when bilinguals switch between two languages during one interaction with another bilingual person. Code-switching in the classroom is not only normal, but it is also a useful learning tool. This study aims to explain the types of code-switching is used by the teacher and students in a conversation class and to describe the students' and teacher’s views on using code-switching as a strategy in instructional EFL communication. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. The participants were the teacher and the students of the intermediate class of PP Fadhlul Fadhlan. The data collection was done by using observation and interviews. The data analysis process included data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The research finding showed that the intermediate-level students and the teacher at PP Fadhlul Fadhlan used three different types of code-switching. They are tag switching, intra-sentential code-switching, and inter-sentential code-switching. The students’ and teacher’s views showed the advantages and disadvantages of using code-switching. This study implies that code-switching can be used as a strategy to help the teacher and the students improve the student’s speaking skill.
