Abstract
The main objective of this study is to find out whether there is or not a significant difference in vocabulary score of students taught using picture message and those taught using non- picture message.
The method of the research is experimental study. The data were obtained by giving test to the experimental class and control class after giving a different learning to both classes. The teacher gave three times teaching to both classes.
The population of the research was the eighth grade students of MTs. Mafatihut Thullab An-Nawawy Surodadi Jepara in the academic year of 2010/2011 which consisting of three class. Each class consists of forty, forty, and thirty six students. The total population was 116 students. The number of the subjects is forty in each class. They are VIII A is as experimental class, VIII B is as control class.
The instruments used to collect the data were: documentation and test. The documentation was used to get the data of students’ name list that become respondents, lesson plan, etc. Test was used to know students’ competence before and after the experiment run. There are two kinds of test. They are pre-test and post test. Before items of the test were given to the students, the writer gave tryout test to analyze validity, reliability, difficulty level and the discriminating power of each item.
After the data were collected, the writer analyzed it. The first analysis data is from the beginning of control class and experimental class that is taken from the pre test value. It is the normality test and homogeneity test. It is used to know that two groups are normal distribution and have same variant. Another analysis data is from the ending of control class and experimental class. It is used to prove the truth of hypothesis that has been planned.
The result of the research: The mean of vocabulary score of experimental class (the students taught using picture message) are 75.25 and the mean of vocabulary score of control class (the students taught without using picture message) are 71.38. There is a difference in vocabulary score between students taught using picture message and those taught without using picture message. It is showed of the mean of experimental class is higher than control class (75.25>71.38). On the other hand, the test of hypothesis using t-test formula shows the value of the t-test is higher than the value of the t-table. The value of t-test is 1.850, while the value of t-table on = 5% is 1,66 (1.850>1,66). The hypothesis is accepted.
Based on the result of this study, it is expected to be an information material for many teachers especially English teachers in teaching modal. So, that can produce students who master English well
