Abstract
This study is based on the students’ difficulties in understanding grammar in MAN Babakan Lebaksiu Tegal especially conditional sentence. To develop teaching grammar, teacher must have a technique in teaching grammar to help students understand the material. Card Sort aims to help students’ activity in the class and improve their understanding about the material. The problems of this research can be stated as follows: 1. how is the use of card sort in teaching conditional sentence at second grade of MAN Babakan Lebaksiu Tegal? 2. How is the improvement of students’ understanding in learning conditional sentence through card sort at second grade of MAN Babakan Lebaksiu Tegal? Its purposes are: 1. to describe the use of card sort in teaching conditional sentence at second grade of MAN Babakan Lebaksiu Tegal. 2. To identify the improvement of students’ understanding in learning conditional sentence through card sort at second grade of MAN Babakan Lebaksiu Tegal?
The study was conducted at MAN Babakan Lebaksiu Tegal in the academic year of 2010/2011. The subject of this study was students of XI IPA3. The number of the subject was 40. Instrument that were used in collecting the data were document, observation and test. The process of this research was conducted in two cycles. They are cycle one and cycle two. But, before conducting in cycle one was conducted pre cycle. Pre cycle was done to know the initial condition before students were taught using card sort. Cycle one was planned after conducting pre cycle and cycle two was conducted based on the reflection results of cycle one.
The result of study shows that using card sort can improve students’ understanding on conditional sentence. This is proving by students’ understanding that was improved in every cycle. In the pre cycle, the average of students’ score was 54,125. In the first cycle, the students got 68,375 and in the second cycle students got 79,125.
