Abstract

The background of this research is teacher still uses manual methods; the teacher only delivers materials verbally. She rarely uses media, so, the students are easy getting bored. Teaching learning process should be varied to and commandment from their teacher. It is teachers’ challenge to be able to motivate the students to pay attention to their lesson. To improve students’ speaking ability, the researcher uses movie as a teaching medium to help them in teaching learning process.
The objective of the research is to prove whether using film differentiates students’ achievement in speaking report text from those who are taught using movie at the eleventh grade of SMA N I Bergas Semarang in the academic year of 2012/2013. The research was conducted at SMA N 1 Bergas Semarang in the academic year of 2012/2013. The subject of this research was the students of eighth grades in class XI Science 1 and XI Science 3 . The number of the subject was sixty four . The design of research used was true experimental research. This research conducted pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The techniques were used to collect the data are documentation and test. In the pre-test, the researcher gave test to both classes with the same instrument. In the treatments, researcher taught the students in control class without film and the writer taught the students in experimental class using film. After doing the treatments, researcher gave post-test to both classes with the same instrument.
After the data had been collected by test, it was found that the pre-test average score of the experimental class was and control class was while, the post-test average of the experimental class was 63.6129 and control class was 61.25 The obtained t-test was 0,541 , whereas the t-table was 1.68 for a = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (0.541 < 1.67). It was meant that Ha was rejected while Ho was accepted . Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, movie was not effective media in improving students’ speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMA N 1 Bergas Semarang in the academic year of 2012/2013. Finally the researcher suggests teachers to use appropriate media in English teaching learning process.
