Abstract

This study examines how social media enhances student engagement in higher education, focusing on English Education students at Walisongo State Islamic University, Semarang. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were gathered through indirect observ ation, interviews with 15 students, and documentation. Findings reveal that WhatsApp is widely used for academic interaction between students and lecturers, sharing information, facilitating discussions, and supporting group assignments. Social media also encourages creativity and independent learning by providing access to additional resources. Its interactive nature supports cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement in learning process. Despite issues like distraction and data privacy, social media offers significant educational benefits when used appropriately. The study highlights the importance of integrating social media into academic activities to enhance student engagement and develop essential 21st-century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and innovation. Educators and institutions are encouraged to adapt to students’ digital habits to maximize learning outcomes.
