Abstract

Learning grammar at Junior High School can be done through many ways, such as: multiple choices, true false question, cut of picture, etc. But the students usually get bored to learn this subject. So, the teacher should device a good exercise or a way of teaching grammar. Teaching grammar especially simple past tense is closely related to indicate something happened in the past, so the researcher taught simple past tense by stimulating students’ oral use of simple past tense through storytelling.
The problems of this research can be stated as follows:
1. How is the score of students test before treatment?
2. How is the score of students test after treatment?
3. Is there a difference in oral use of simple past tense test between pre-post test score of students?
4. How is the application of storytelling in stimulating students' oral use of simple past tense?
The main objectives of this study are:
1. To find out the score of students before treatment.
2. To find out the score of students after treatment.
3. To know the difference between pre test and post test score of students.
4. To know the application of storytelling in stimulating students' oral use of simple past tense.
The method of the research is an experimental study. The data were obtained by giving test to the experimental class and control class after giving a different learning to both classes.
The number of the subjects is 29 students in each class. They are VIII A is as experimental class (the students who are taught using storytelling), VIII B is as control class (the students who are not taught using storytelling) and VIIIC is as try out class( the students who are gave test before control and experimental was given.
The instruments used to collect the data were interview, observation and test. The interview and observation were used to complete and support the data which is obtained. Test was used to know students’ competence before and after the experiment run. There are three kinds of test. They are: try out test, pre-test and post test.
The result of the research: The mean of grammar score of experimental class (the students taught using storytelling) are 78,62 and The mean of grammar score of control class (the students taught using non-storytelling) are 68,79. There is a difference in grammar score between students taught using storytelling and those taught using non-storytelling. It is showed by the mean of experimental class is higher than control class (78,62 > 68,79). On the other hand, the test of hypothesis using t-test formula shows the value of the t-test is higher than the value of the t-table. The value of t-test is 3.35, while the value of t-table on = 5% is 2.003 (3.35 > 2.003). The hypothesis is accepted.
Based on the result of this study, it is expected to be an information for many teachers especially English teachers in teaching grammar especially past tense (simple past tense). So, it can enhance students who master English well.
