Abstract

According to folklore and the general view in the literature of Java, Islam came and spread in Java is spreaded by nine wâlî who are members of a council called Walisongo. One of Walisongo it is Sunan Muria. There is a myth that is growing, is if there is an unmarried couple come to the tomb of Sunan Muria, then the relationship will be broken. Although the myth is irrelevant today, but some people still believe it.
Myth is very prominent role in the lives of Java society. The function of the existence of the myth of relationship before marriage Sunan Muria’s tomb can be seen from the social and cultural life. Based on the reality, the authors formulated two issues are; Firstly, what are the ethical values contained in myth of relationship before marriage in Sunan Muria’s tomb. Secondly, how patterns of behavior youth couples in Sunan Muria’s tomb.
To answer the research questions, data collection is done by observation that is used by the author to see the classification of the views and the function of myth. Other methods of data collection is interview, digging up information to the informants, including administrators of YM2SM, Leaders of Community, Colo’s Residents (local communities) and the youth couples. It the author also uses documentation method, it is to explain the object of research. This study uses anthropological approach, the data processing is descriptive analysis of qualitative. After some data are collected, then the myth of relationship before marriage will be analyzed by using the Mircea Eliade’s concept.
The results of this study are: Firstly, ethical values of myth of relationship before marriage in Sunan Muria’s tomb, are Manifestations of respect to Sunan Muria, Keeping sacredness Sunan Muria’s Tomb, and Tomb is a place for pilgrimage, not for dating. Secondly, the are differences in patterns of behavior between pilgrims who came to the tomb of Sunan Muria and people who are dating are just going to the tour places in Colo. Based on the goal, people make visit to the tomb with their dears wanna get Sunan Muria’s blessings, so they do not believe in the myth. But the couple who just came to the tourist places that is near the tomb of Sunan Muria has a purpose for dating and being alone, so they believe in the myth.
