Abstract
The background of the research was based on the observations that have been made by the writer with the teacher of English of Mts. Negeri Mranggen, some students have difficulties in learning English. Most of them lacking motivation in teaching learning process, it caused by less support from their environment in learn English. Besides that, they also easy to forget what have been presented by teacher. In this thesis the writer tries to examine on teaching simple present tense. The use of Climbing Grammar Mountain Game is one of games that can be used in teaching simple present tense. By using memory round game, hopefully can make students more enthusiasm in teaching learning process in order to make them easier to understand about simple present tense. The study was aimed at responding the following questions: (1) How is the implementation of climbing grammar mountain game to improve students’ mastery of simple present tense? (2) How is the improvement of the students’ mastery of simple present tense after being taught by using climbing grammar mountain game ?
In this study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research that was done in two cycles. The data were obtained by test, observation and documentation. The test used to measure students’ mastery of simple present tense and after the teacher implemented climbing grammar mountain game. The observation was administered to know the students’ activities during the teaching. Documentation was used to look for the data concerning matters or the variable that are taken in the form of the note or photo in teaching learning process
The results of the analysis were used to describe the improvement of students’ mastery of simple present tense which was indicated by their score in test. It can be seen from the result of cycle 1, where in pre cycle students’ mean was only 52,14, it increased up to 21. 23 became 73. 37 in cycle 1. In cycle 2 it increased up to 4.73 became 78.10.
Based on the result of the study, the writer suggested that the use of Climbing Grammar Mountain Game can be an alternative way to teach the language learner, especially to improve the students’ mastery of simple present tense. This result hopefully would motivate language teacher to use climbing grammar mountain game in teaching English in the classroom, especially when teaching grammar to the level of Junior High School students.
