Abstract

Speech act is the basic unit of communication. Since the development of speech act’s theory, speech act is the central of communication. Moreover, the various of speech act have important role in leading a successful interpersonal communication especially in the process of teaching and learning English. Expressive are those kinds of speech act that express psychological attitude or state of the speaker such as a joy, sorrow, and like/dislikes. It is includes apologizing, blaming, congratulating, praising, and thanking. As Yule argued that expressives are those kinds of speech act that state what the speaker feels. The writer conducted this research to analyze the types of Expressive Speech Acts are used by main character in Zootopia movie and to explain the Expressive Speech Act used by main character in Zootopia movie. The writer used Searle’s theory and qualitative approach to analyzie the data. Thus, in this movie there were 41 utterances in 1 hour 48 minutes and 27 seconds duration as the source of data to identify the expressive speech act. The result of this research shows that there are five types of expressive speech act used by main character. They are : Expressive for thanking (27%), expressive for greeting (5%), expressive for apologize (5%), expressive for wishes (7%) and expressive for attitude (56%). Expressive of Congratulation did not find in this research and expressive of attitude is more often used by main character. The other result shows that Expressive Speech Acts used by main character in Zootopia movie has contribution to EFL learner in understanding expressive for attitude because expressive for attitude interprets basic competence (3.2).
