Abstract
This thesis concerns in applying words structure clues strategy to unlock the meaning and improve students’ reading quality at third semester students at Advanced Reading class of ELT Department at Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty. The main objective of this study is to find out whatever there is or not a significant difference between students who were taught by using words structure clues strategy and who were not taught by using words structure clues strategy. The hypothesis of this research that there is a significant difference students’ reading quality achievement score of unlocking the meaning of words between they were taught using words structure clues strategy and they were not taught by using words structure clues strategy at third semester of ELT Department at Advanced Reading class of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty in the Academic Year of 2013/2014.
This research is quantitative research. The research design used is experimental design. The instrument used to collect the data in this research is test.
The subject of this study is third semester of ELT Department at Advanced Reading Class of IAIN Walisongo Semarang at Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty in the Academic Year of 2013/2014. The number of population is 65. In taking the sample, the writer used random sampling technique. Class TBI 3A is chosen as experimental class who were taught reading by using words structure clues strategy and class TBI 3B is chosen as control class who were not taught reading by using words structure clues strategy.
In accordance with the data analysis, the result shows the average score for the experimental class is 64.29 for the pre test and 80.29 for the post test. While the average score for control class is 61.17 for the pre test and 61.50 for the post test. In the result of post test of experimental class is 80.29 which higher than control class is 61.50. It means that teaching reading to unlock the meaning of words by using words structure clues strategy is better than teaching reading to unlock the meaning of words without using words structure clues strategy. The result of the calculation using t-test showed that t value = 8.005 and t-table for = 5% is 1.67. It means that t value is higher than t table (8.005>1.67). It can be concluded that there is significant difference in the students’ achievement score of third semester of ELT Department at Advanced Reading Class at Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty of IAIN Walisongo Semarang in the Academic Year of 2013/2014 between the students who were taught reading to unlock the meaning of words by using words structure clues strategy and who were not taught by using words structure clues strategy. The hypothesis is accepted.
