Abstract
This final project is based on the research study which attempts to examine the use of songs in enhancing students’ mastery of prepositions. It is in contrast with the use of conventional method for teaching prepositions. The main purpose of the study was to find out the effectiveness of using songs in enhancing students’ mastery of prepositions. Based on that purpose, the writer wanted to find out whether songs can be an alternative way in teaching prepositions.
The study was conducted at eight grade of SMP Hj.Isriati Baiturrahman Semarang in the academic year of 2010/2011. The kind of research is quantitative research. This study was an experimental research with pretest-posttest (experimental) control group design. Two groups of students were taken as the subjects of this research. The first group was the experimental group and the other was the control group. These two groups were given the same test but different treatments. The experimental group was treated by using songs that was sung by Avril Lavigne by the title “Mobil” and Michael Heart by the title “We will not go down”. while the control group was treated by conventional teaching. The instrument of this study was test that had been done by other group to determine validity, reliability, item difficulty and discriminating power of the test.
Based on the results of the research, the result shows the average score for the experimental class is 61.5 for the pre test and 75.8 for the post test. While the average for control class is 62.875 for the pre test and 72 for the post test. From the calculation using the t-test showed that t value is higher than t table that = 2.626 and t table for alpha= 5% was 1.66. It means that the value is higher than t table (2.626 > 1.66). It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in students ability score between students who were taught prepositions using songs than students who were taught without it. So, we can conclude that teaching prepositions using songs is effective, and so the hypothesis is accepted.
